Dreams of Hidden Rooms

I have many reoccurring dreams, and I can usually figure out what they mean after a little thought, but one has baffled me for a while.

Why do I dream that I find hidden rooms in my house?

A couple of websites offer these interpretations:

1. The hidden room may be a part of yourself that you keep hidden from others; a part of yourself that you will not allow anyone to "go to", and which you only allow yourself to "peek" at. (source)

2. Discovering hidden rooms means that your subconscious is getting you ready for surprises in your life - new interests, goals, potential ventures, and/or unexpected possibilities, and whole unexplored parts of yourself that you never knew existed. (source)

(it's hard to find much online, since many dream dictionaries are incomplete or opinion-based)

As my mom always says, you're the best interpreter of your own dreams. So what do I think is happening?

Typically, when I find a hidden room in my dream, there's a sense of relief like I needed the extra room for some reason. Therefore, it may have to do with discovering myself or preparing for new things in my life, and being excited about those possibilities. Or maybe it could just mean I want a little more space to put stuff. :)

  1. In counseling school, one mode of dream interpretation I learned was that all parts of the dream can be considered as parts of yourself. i.e., "I am a hidden room and no one can find me, and here's what that feels like"; "I am a house, and part of me is undiscovered and heres' what that feels like..."; "I am the person looking for an extra room and here's what that feels like..."

Even, "I am the hallway that she is walking down..." or, "I am the paintin on the wall", or, "I am the storm cloud outside as she finds the room", or whatever.

Every detail of the dream is something that YOU put there, so it can be considered a part of you and has something to tell you.

Anyhow... I like that you feel relieved when you find it. That makes it a good dream. And it seems significant.

    1. If anyone has had a dream like this one, please contact me! I dream that im in a place, sometimes it's a home I recognize, sometimes it's in a home I don't recognize at all. But in the dream im in an attic, and there are 3 rooms in this attic. The first room is old, dusty, and rickety. In my younger years of dreaming this I used to play with my sister in this room. I'm always a little uneasy in this room but usually if she is there im okay. There is a door in this room that is locked that opens to a second room which is a huge library with every book imaginable, I feel more comfortable here than the first room and WAY more comfortable here than in the third room. There is a door in the huge room that leads to the third room. I've only unlocked and gone into the third room once but in my dreams I always remember what is in there. There is a toy room with tons of little toys, in addition there is a presence that is absolutely terrifying. I remember when I first had the dream there was a boy in that room and I remember we talked but I can't remember what about, only that I ran out the room screaming in terror. Since that first dream I've dreaded going past the first door and today the dream was especially strange because my boyfriend was in it and he insisted on checking out the rooms. I stayed outside the attic, once he went in I called and called and called for him but he wouldn't answer. I woke up without knowing what happened.

    4. I've had similar dreams....except instead of an attic there is a staircase leading to 3 upper levels in a house but as I go up to each level the staircase becomes more and more unfinished and unstable. In the first level it's usually part of the house I grew up in and often my family members are around...but for whatever reason I feel uneasy or the need to go up the stairs, and I end up in the second level of the house. The second level is never the same ....sometimes a white room with crystals hanging all over the place or sometimes a study with dark wood and red curtains BUT this is also a room to explore and exciting or beautiful in some way. The last level always has a forbidden feeling, the staircase seems like it's almost swaying in the wind and everything is unfinished and dark. I always feel the need to reach this top level no matter what. I begin to have trouble breathing, like the air is growing thin, and that's when I wake up. I've been having this reoccurring dream for like 25 years, although not as common now as in the past.

Maybe you're dream is similar....I think like the first level in my dream or first attic room in yours, it represents the past - maybe thats why your sister is there because she is a familiar part of your past. Also it could be why everything is covered in dust? It's old and done with?

The second room is about discovery, it represents the present and all the possibilities you have in the current moment. It's about exploring, learning and discovering your life around you as it exists currently.

Lastly the third room could be about fear of the unknown or distant future. Your third room is full of toys so maybe you feel like fate is toying with you? The unknown presence that makes you uncomfortable could literally be 'The Unknown'. Has your relationship with your boyfriend become more serious lately? If it's at a point where he knows about your past and is a huge part of your presence maybe the dream included him because you're wondering about your future together? Maybe you're more seriously thinking about your shared future/goals?

OR maybe it's just a weird dream :P - either way, kind of seemed similar than mine so I thought I'd share.

    5. I also dream I'm in my house and go to section I didn't know existed. It's always a big room with nothing in it. Kind cold inside and old like if no one has been there in a long time

    6. Jessica's dream is fascinating, and I think quite obvious to explain. The 3 rooms are 3 phases of your life. The dusty, old, rickety room is your present life. You say you used to play with your sister in that room when you were younger, but not now, which is probably the same as in your present life. The room with all the books is your school years, or maybe even just some part of your school years, in which you were likely happy or felt safe. Most importantly, the room with the toys is your childhood or your early childhood, and there is something terrible lurking there. Maybe something terrible happened to you (even if you are consciously unaware) or maybe there was some terrifying presence. Either way, your mind does not want to go back into that place.

    7. I have a recurring dream where I am living in an apartment I used to rent. It was an apartment I rented on my own after a very bad breakup. In my dream I find all of these hidden passageways that lead to abandoned rooms that look like they were once quite posh - like an old speakeasy or something. There are chandeliers and luxurious furnishings covered in dust and cobwebs. In the dream I feel excited and lucky... like I'm discovering exactly what I've always wanted and it's as though I'm the only person who knows it's there. I always wake up just before I'm able to clean it all up and revitalize it. I feel like I can't wait to show it to everyone I know but I always wake up before I get a chance to tell anyone.

    8. i have a dream where i am in a house that’s partially a school/business looking part of the building, but the other half is like a mansion. a majority of the time i just explore in it, but recently i’ve been dreaming of being chased. i always run to the hidden rooms and i know they’re in the back left part of the building so i go there as fast as i can and open doors that lead to other rooms and hidden stairwells the most recent dream i had didn't give me enough time to hide and i was found but i fought my attacker and died so i woke up. the hidden rooms are the only ones that stay the same though in every dream of the house it’s always changing expect the hidden ones which are always children’s rooms with no kids. there are toys that have never been played with and i try to understand this dream but i can’t find anyone who has had a similar one.

    10. I've been having the same dream for years now ,same house and it looks small and old from the outside but you go inside and it has staircases that lead to different rooms som3 rooms are weird some rooms have like an arcade in them but when it gets to the last room you have to go through thes3 stairs that get very tight inside this hall and the door is so small to get in but once you get in it,is this big fancy looking room with glass walls and a huge fancy bathroom and I've had that same dream with the same house like 5 or 6 times now

  2. I have the same dream... I find an entire third floor to our home with a very cool room for my husband and me; or I find a new door that leads to an unknown living room. I probably dream a variation of this dream on an average of twice a month. I find rooms for my children. I usually have to ascend a rather ridiculously built ladder type staircase to reach the upstairs rooms. I am so excited about finding the rooms in my dream and as you say I do feel a sense of relief. I seem very happy to find this extra space and start making plans as to how I will utilize the extra space. I even remark or think in the dream that this is crazy that this room has been there all along and I have just now found it. I think in the dream that I know it could have been so useful to me if I had only known of its existance? I have this so much I feel I really need to do something about this because obviously my subconcious must want me to act on this since I revisit it constantly?

    2. I've had this dream often too. Last night, I discovered a sun room with windows facing the south. I've been wanting a room like this! I was happy.

The rooms aren't always a happy relief to find though. I've had dreams were the rooms were dark and frightening.

    3. I can't believe all of you have very similar dreams to my own. I am usually very excited to find all these new rooms. The only thing is that near the end of the dream, I usually start getting the creeps for some reason and do not want to be alone. But for the most part, I am very excited!

I have been having this same dream since I was 5 I am now 17, but my dream is that I'm at my grandparents house and an extra room is discovered in between the bathroom and their bedroom, once I'm in I can't get out the bedroom is old fashioned and very neat and tidy the floor is white shiny laminate wood and the walls are pink there are two steps in the middle of the room which lead you up to a dressing table area, in the dream there are about 7 people just sitting there smiling not moving or doing anything (sometimes I think that maybe be the unwritten part of my dream? I don't know) and sometimes in the dream I'm able to find a set of lifts that lead me to other strange rooms - I'm not always able to find the lifts before waking up, I wake up hot sweaty and scared it gets scarier the older I get I would love to know what this dream means as its something that bothers me so much so if anyone knows could you please email me jessicawarner2012@hotmail.co.uk

    5. Yes, I do have the same sensation as melisa in my hidden room dreams.

These dreams occured since the last few months.

The strange thing now is that when I'm dreaming it again that I already now it is there! The dream is so powerfull that when I'm waking up I'm looking around in my house to check if it's really there!

    6. I can't believe I am having this same dream, same emotions described by Melissa. A secret room that I immediate have a sensation to utilize and I always knew was there, a room - a whole level I immediately recognize. I have had this dream since I was maybe 3. I am now 42 and just had this dream last night, 11/11/2013 but this time I was sharing it with a stranger who also recognized this whole elaborate secret space. How strange that suddenly I find your posts! Just had chills the moment I found this page. When I was a kid I found this room on the other side of the closet door at the end of my childhood hallway on the second floor. The room was like an amusement park, sensational rides and fully occupied. As I grow older, these dreams become less and less in between, and nearly empty, and I think this room won't be so bad after a good dusting... Incredible!

    7. Melissa's dream is so similar to mine. I have that same sense of relief in finding the space which is rather luxurious (or nicer than my home) with huge spaces where I think about how I'll use them.
I feel almost silly for not seeing them earlier.
Towards the end there is often some feeling of dread or realisation why I don't use the area as it becomes a little spooky.
Once I ended up leaving the room/s through huge French doors out to a pretty, although foggy garden but last time I stayed in the room starting to rearrange furniture but there were huge holes in the floor, that the couches had been covering up.

  3. I just had this dream. Have had it so many times throughout my life. The secret rooms are always unique in some way. I've always thought maybe it's a desire for something new-a discovery. Or more of something. Either from the self or the material world.

  5. I often dream of a hidden room, but in my dreams im being chased/attacked and find this room to hide in,the last time I dreamt it though, in this hidden room I discovered a small window and kept putting curtains and sheets on it to cover it up.I also remember a stair case going into a wall.

  6. I have a very similiar dream of finding a hidden room in my house, that is quite beautifully designed and decoreated, but the room is very large but in bad need of repair. In my dream, I think that there is absolutely no way that I can fix the room.

I started having this dream 7 years ago after my divorce. Go figure... :)

    1. I have started having a very similar reoccuring dream of a hidden area of my house (usually a large high school type swimming pool/locker room in disrepair or a large attic filled with items (& it is haunted). I am overhwhelmed with the repairs needed. This dream started after my divorce.

    2. I have both these types of dreams too, also finding a whole extra wing, or rooms in disrepair, the attic one is the most creepy, it always scares me

    3. This seems exactly like mine. I'm delighted to find hidden rooms but they are always ver shabby and ultimately haunted :(

    4. I've been having the hidden room dream since I was a small child and now I'm late middle age. As a child, the back fo my closet opened up into a large pleasant room. Now the dream is I find a whole multistory wing to my house. It is very dusty and somewhat decrepit. At first I think it is cool that all this extra space is right there but then I realize it is haunted. In some of the dreams there are dead people living int he wing.

      Delete
    5. I have the same recurring dream as well.. I find extra hidden rooms or whole wings that are haunted and old in disrepair. It is never in my house where I live now, but always in houses I've never been in. Sometimes I'm being chased and sometimes I'm exploring but always I am scared. I wonder if this means we are frightened of a part of ourselves? That we have vast unexplored areas that seems scary and are perhaps ancient and spiritual, yet being ignored? Or are filled with the remnants of past lives or people in our own lives that linger somewhere deep within us. What do you guys think?

    6. I've had the same as the post above. Probably had the dream since I was about 5/6 years old and I'm now 33. Last night though, was the first time that I ran into someone. It was a boy with longer hair, asleep on his side with his back facing me. The room was dingy and the bed had no linens. Very strange. Ugh.

    7. in searching for hidden starcases this is a good read. this dream starts (have had recurring dreams of same house) where I have to climb up to the third floor or attic sometimes with great difficulty and danger; then I find a secret staircase, beautiful unused. a place to hide, a way to get to the attic in safety. Then last night my parents were there and said there was no staircase, all my siblings agreed. they had even papered over the door. I tore the paper off and when I opened the door they were using it as a storage area. I was angry, everyone agreed they knew of the staircase and was keeping it secret. why am I haveing these recuring dreams?

  7. I have had a similar dream about once every 4 months about the house my wife and I have owned for 13 years now. There is this second story that is the size of the house or bigger that I somehow stumble upon and it is big and extravagant but dusty and dirty as it should be for not being accessed for so long. There was a living room, bathrooms, huge kitchen and remember being amazed and excited in my dream, but dumbfounded I didnt know it was there. Everything was dated and needed much attention.

  8. I'm here because I had a hidden room dream last night. I have had them in the past too. While I'm excited to find the hidden rooms, I must admit, I'm afraid too. I always run back to a familiar room in the house and try to get someone to go back with me. It won't be scary if we can clean it up and make it part of the "whole" house. Sadly... I can never get anyone to take the time to go back with me. Geez, how symbolic.

  9. I had a dream last night that I was in some sort of enormous mansion finding hidden passages & unlocking or "solving" how to open each door. I have had this dream before several times, although each dream is months or years apart, it is oddly sequential. The first time I dreamed of it I was in a giant mansion with people downstairs having tea, dressed nicely. It was too proper & stiff for me, so I went exploring around the house & found a single hidden door. I went inside & was greeted by a hallway of sorts with many doors, stairs, and passages. I was thrilled in the dream, because I was quite sure no one else in the house knew they existed, and that I had stumbled upon something extraordinary.

I went through the hallway with great excitement and continued to find more passages & stairs. The strangest thing was that I found there were patterns to opening some doors. Some doors wouldn't open, until I went to another door, opened it twice & closed it, and then returned to the other door, which would then open freely. (It was kind of similar to a Super Mario brothers game where you have to figure out a pattern for the Ghost House - if you've ever played that.)

Anyways, the goal & excitement in the dream came from continuously finding new hallways & passages, not in the rooms themselves, as I don't remember any room being filled with anything in particular, although they may have been. The hallways & passages & stairs were all made of beautiful dark mahogany looking wood, and although it was clearly old it seemed polished & cared for, as though someone cleaned it recently. But no one knew about this wonderful maze of passages & codes except me.

    .................

My dream last night was very similar, but this time I remembered many codes to opening new doors, and the house had expanded to lead into a movie theater, people's rooms who I entered & interacted with, and also a bit of playful chasing which did not seem either negative or positive necessarily.

Can anyone help me figure out what my initial & mainly recurring theme is about - regarding the passages?

    1. My first thought is you should write. I loved reading your short descriptions above.

I'm no dream sluth, but it sounds to me that your passages are choices - and they're all positive. I think any door you go through will be positive because you're so willing and exciting to open the doors to your past, present and future (depending what the door/room represents to you).

I hope one of the doors leads you to a typewriter or computer to start writing stories.

  10. I have had many recurring about discovering new rooms in our present home that we built and have lived in for 9 years now. In my dream, I'm cleaning the house and happen to find a whole wing that I didn't know about. I am amazed to find several rooms consisting of 5 bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room. To get to one bathroom, I must squeeze through a very narrow opening to get into it. Despite not knowing about these rooms they are decorated very nicely and don't need cleaning.

  11. Wow !
I am having trouble at work and the Boss seems to on my back.
The last time i dreamt about my hidden room was when I had the same problem years ago when I was getting bullied at school.
My secret room is an unused laboritary that no one knows about Its up a narrow corridor and brilliantly white and clean and smells fresh. No one ever goes there and I feel completely safe. I strive to find this place in real life..

  12. I've dreamed of finding an extra room or wing or floor several times a year for my entire life! 1. That is EXACTLY my dreams. Had this dream again last night. Opened a door in my house and found a very old very beautiful hand carved staircase covered in dust that lead me to an entire "wing" or apartment or whatever you want to call it. The house was furnished with old furniture but covered in dust. The rooms were so big and the windows were beautiful! I feel like there was so much detail in this living space that I must have been here before. I can't place it though, I have no idea were I would've seen this home but I could actually sit down and draw detailed floor plan. There was an underlying anticpation feeling but I don't know what I was waiting for.....if that makes sense.

  13. I woke up from a dream today and decided to google it since I've had a portion of it before. Yes, I saw myself in my mother in laws house (only it wasnt really anything like her house) and we were going to move into it. I remember being excited when I found a whole new wing that even she didnt know about. My husband and I investigated all the rooms. I wouldnt say it was "old" but the furnishings werent modern at all. It was clean and dusted and very nice wood floors and wood paneled walls. I woke up briefly and fell back asleep and the dream morphed to me exploring an old hospital that was attached to the house. This part of the dream was scary because the hospital was abandoned and dirty. I got the sense it was a mental hospital of some sort. Then as I explored it became an old hotel with multiple stories. My husband was gone and now I was with my parents and my youngest child. We were being chased by zombies/crazy people all through the hotel. Finally, the hotel turned into a mall and as we ran we found a brightly lit womens' clothing store and found our way out the back of the store. We were saved by a fleeing man in a blue pick up truck. Weird weird weird!!

  14. I am 36yrs old and spoke to my father today saying how frustrated I feel by a re occuring dream that I have been having for a couple of months.
In it I have moved to a new house, always in need of renervation. I discover secret rooms behind fire places, by crawling through cupboards or climbing a broken staircase. They are always very difficult for me to get to but I feel desperate to uncover them.I have also been amazed that I never realised the rooms were there in the first place!

  15. I have the same type of recurring dream. In the dream I find extra rooms in my home or whole other apartments that are mine. They are always unfurnished and in need of decorating. The dreams were so clear, I decided to go to a professional to have it interpreted. She suggested that the dream meant that I am in a period of spiritual awakening that could last several years. The extra rooms represented extra space. Since all the rooms were upstairs this suggested that it was something very spiritual. There were other things about the dreams too that I will keep to myself, but I hope the parts I shared helped. It is very exciting.

  16. I found a hidden room in a dream during the week. In my house, but a dream house, not the house I live in. It was large, square, completely internal, and unfinished; just bare concrete an wires. I was surprised to find it as I seemed to have forgotten about it, though I had designed the house (I'm an architect). The rest of the house was beautifully finished. I was in a hallway, and looked back in one direction to a large kitchen/dining (the heart of my house) and in then turned and looked in to other, where the hallway sloped down to an exit. The hidden room opened off the hallway. My first thought was to open the roof to the open air, and turn in into a courtyard to let more light into the surrounding rooms. I was telling this to my partner in the dream. I am actually at the cusp of huge life-change, at the end, I hope of prolonged divorce proceedings, and completing a PhD, hoping for career change. The dream was bright, pleasant and optimistic, though it took place during a very mentally tough week. I hope it speaks for itself!

  17. I have a very similiar dream. My current home is a somewhat large Victorian that I have totally renovated, but in my dream, I find a room that can be best described as a huge ballroom that is in bad need of repair. I look at the room and feel that there is no way I can fix it because it is way too big of a project.

In my dream, I go outside and look at this ballroom and the exterior has holes in it, paint is pealing, etc. I then feel very frustrated and overwhelmed that I cannot fix it.

This dream started after my wife of 19 years divorced me. I always felt I could fix anything but I could not fix our marraige. In my dream, I feel I cannot fix my house.

    I thnk I am nuts!!!!

  18. I think it's amazing that so many have described the exact recurring dream I've been having for so long. My first recollection of the dream was that I was in an old ex-boyfriend's house (an ex from high school and I'm 40!) and we had to climb these short winding strange and narrow stairs to get to this entire wing. I've had so many variations of this dream - and this week I dreamed I found 2 extra kitchens and lots of living space that I thought would be perfect for my almost 18-year old stepson to live in as his "apartment". Like above posters, I'm always amazed I never knew the spaces were there. Once I dreamed I had a restaurant-type living area complete with tables and chairs, dancefloor, bar, and space for a band. While I have no idea what it means, it's comforting somehow to know we all share this crazy dream!

  19. I've had dreams like this my whole life -- they vary as to whether the rooms are clean and well-furnished or well-furnished but dirty, cluttered, and in need of renovations. I've even had the scary abandoned hospital/mental asylum version of the dream. What's interesting to me, and I wonder if anyone else can attest to this, is that the dreams are so incredibly real that I tend to remember the rooms as if they actually exist. I still can clearly recall versions of this dream I had when I was a kid! The weird side-effect of this is that, when awake, I find myself longing for the room and feeling a sort of loss over the fact that it doesn't really exist.

    2. I can definitely attest to the feeling of longing for the space. Mine are always found when I am with someone else ina house I know and wander somewhere for something. I usually dream of multi level big open spaces with some more hidden nooks and crannies and it's well decorated and looked as through its just been waiting for me as if I'd just left. Ie lights are on and maybe music playing. I dream of lavish and multiple bathrooms too. Hmm maybe I'm materialistic or maybe I'm trying to think up plans for my dream house ie the one I will physically plan and build. I want it to have a bit of a rabbit warren hide and go seek or Alice in wonderland feeling. ...

The extra rooms are huge, contain bathrooms, and there is stuff everywhere: furniture, clothes, weird stuff I've never seen, just so much stuff. It feels overwhelming, scary, and strange. I just had this dream again last night, again it was 2 extra rooms ( and its liike the rooms aren't suppose to be there/secret/etc)l and filled w/ all that stuff.

  22. I was looking for an answer to a dream I have over and over. It is about a bedroom in my in-laws home. It is beautifully decorated, clean, in order, Never used, and haunted. When I get near the door I can feel the heaviness of evil. When the door is open just looking in is scary. I love my in-laws, and have been apart of the family for 32 years. I just can't understand why I dream of this room.

    1. I have this similar feeling about an unused attic space in my parents old Victorian home, they no longer live there. There is an attic filled with old stuff , then a door to another bedroom with no windows, then a small entrance to a room off of that one, I keep thinking my kids could do with the extra space but the feeling is horrible

  23. I've had this recurring dream for years. It's not always the same home, but it's always "my" home. I'm always excited to find the space - sometimes it's furnished, sometimes not. I usually have to ascend a strangely built staircase to get there or crouch really low to scoot through a "tunnel" type entry to access the space.
Here's a kicker: last night I dreamed that I'd moved from one home to another and while settling in to the new home, I had an overwhelming sense of regret that I'd left the home that had "all that extra space". In the dream I remembered finding the extra spaces in the previous home and couldn't believe I'd given all that up to move to this inferior home.
I can't for the life of me figure out what it's about, other than I did "give up" having children to marry my husband who didn't want anymore. I always envisioned myself being a housewife and home maker and am now "stuck" in a "career" i never wanted. I'm actually very happy to not have any children and even if given the option to have them now, I'd choose not to... but I'm wondering if the dream is somehow connected to this life choice/situation.

  25. I too have been having this dream for at the past 5 years. Sometimes the rooms or wings I find are in bad need of repair, but usually, they are extraordinary. The only catch is I have to either fall or climb through humungous spiders, spider webs, etc. to get there; but in always glad that I did. The one I had last night was about a house that in the dream I had just purchased. The house had a huge back yard that lead to a river and the front yard was huge too and far from any neighbors. I felt lucky to have been able to purchase the house, as it was way out of my price range but because either I inherited it or it was haunted (its always haunted but sometimes I inherit the house in my dreams)I am able to easily afford it. I lived only a few minutes from the beach which I was thrilled about, so my entire family came to see the house. We were going downstairs when I found another stairwell with an archway over it; we went through it and found a beautiful Victorian style wing of the mansion. The furniture was Victorian, the decorations, everything. But there were little ferrets in there who seemed to be just fine, in fact they were very healthy and had lavish little outfits (hahaha!) and collars and leashes, etc. I even saw a huge fish tank that was very well cared for. I was worried about how i was going to be able to keep my cats from eating the ferrets. I found a room over looking the river with centuries old wine and champagne in it...I decided I would dress up in the outfits (all very formal Victorian dress that had apparently been my great great great (a lot of greats) grandmothers and drink this wine. My family decided they needed to go home and left. The shut the door which I was hesitant about at first, because I knew the house was haunted. But I decided to stay anyway. I didn't feel that I was in any real danger from the spirits, in fact I think they were excited to have some company.

  26. I'm interested that so many here enjoy the extra space in their dreams. I'm creeped out by it, and get the feeling that someone else is living in it. Mine, like many of yours, is old, dusty space that is in need of freshening up. But it always freaks me out - to think that there's this alternate home that's part of mine, but hidden... *shudder*

  27. I have had dreams where I "remember" that I own another house, which was so real that I thought I was losing my mind when I woke up. But recently I've had dreams about discovering new parts of my existing house (now my real one, but a dream house that I know I live in). The first couple times I dreamt it, the rooms all needed to be repiared, and all the rooms were somehow interconnected. This started a couple years ago in the middle of my divorce. More recently, I have discover entire floors, larger than what I thought was my house, and they were all beautifully decorated with a previous owner's belongings (toys, bathroom decor, a wedding dress and other personal effects). My children and I quickly decided to move into these rooms because they were perfect for us. Oddly enough, my co-workers also appeared in my dream. They were having a yard sale in my front yard, and were shocked that I didn't know about the extra rooms. They knew they were there all along. I am at a phase in my life where I am thinking about changing careers, which as a single mom is scary, and I am considering going back for a PhD. I've also recently completed EMDR to help me handle events related to me PTSD, and reached a definite point of healing. Everyone's comments here have helped me understand these dreams... It looks like mine surface when I am going through big changes, and they are tinged by whatever emotions I have related to the change. Also, maybe I am re-discovering or finally seeing, where my strengths are, even though they have been evident to others (like my co-workers) all along. While the dreams didn't make me fearful, they were a little unsettling. But isn't all change a little that way?

  28. I'm kinda worried. In my dream I didnt have hidden rooms, instead I had hidden passages to other peoples homes. Ironically they use the passages to find me and not the other way around. What worries me more though is that in these dreams its women that find me and they lead me to cheat on my wife. In these dreams I feel quite dirty and yet despite this I cant resist the call of these parts of my dreams.
So, what does this mean and what can I do in my waking life to help elimate my subconsiousness desire to have them????

    1. I don't know whether you believe in that kind of thing but that sounds to me like it could be a demonic attack which is very common. Look up incubus and succubus, where people are sexually provoked at night or in their sleep - sleep paralysis is also connected - by spirit type creatures of various descriptions. This is not good and by no means ought you to give in to their seduction, however attractive that might seem to be.

      Delete
    2. Seriously. Whoever posted this reply about demonic attack, what a ridiculous and thoughtless thing to say. This gentleman was already worried about his feelings and you start to carry on about succubi and other 'evil' stuff

If you can't say something positive and encouraging, maybe don't say anything at all...certainly not something to bring him more worry.

    3. My personal interpretation is that in regular everyday life, unlike a lot of married men, you don't indulge yourself in fantasies of other women you come across. Biologically speaking, you probably subconsciously notice attractive women all day long, but the love for your wife and fear of acknowledging the sexual attractiveness of them has maybe caused you to put them behind hidden locked doors and your worst fear is that they will break through and make you acknowledge them & from that acknowledgement you will be unable to control yourself. Perhaps your subconscious is telling to face your fears in everyday life, maybe take a moment to fully appreciate the beauty of the sexy women you come across without guilt or fear that it will lead to anything. Then take a few moments longer to think of how your wife is more beautiful and more tempting... Hmm maybe it would work? lol

  29. I have this reoccurring dream also and have had it since I was very young. I am 45 now. It is always in the house that I grew up in, yet the house isn't exact, but very close. Even though it is reoccurring, it has variations. The one I had last night started off by tearing into a wall for some reason and finding an extra set of rooms and hallway. It appeared that whoever walled over it was in a hurry and left all of the furniture, wall hangings, even newspapers on a table from that era, which was early 1900s. It was very dark & dirty and in a state of disrepair due to the age, At first the find was exciting, but eventually turned evil, with human-like creatures that were acting aggressively towards me. This was what seemed to be the longest most detailed version I have had. Previous versions involved extra basement or attic space that needed immediate and extensive repairs, but did not involve these creatures.

  30. I have always had dreams of houses that I have come to own, and am supprized to find new rooms, filled with very rare artifacts, science insturments, or art. I continually am happy regarding the results of my findings, and often end up wishing it will not end?

  31. Cant believe how many ppl have had variations of the dream I had last night. In my dream it was an old dumpy house on top and myself and a bunch of ppl I didnt know were referbishing it. Only the ppl kept painting the wall colors that I didn't like. Soon I dicover a hallway with beautiful rooms almost in egyption style furnishings, then I found a vault type door with a lock, and wouldn't you know I had the key, behind the door was an apartment with a man living there, the man looked just like my husband only he wasn't my husband in the dream, but I was instantly drawn to him. He had drugs and pipes laying everywhere, i asked him where did you get all this and he said take the elevator. Then i go out and find the elevator. And when you get out of the elevator your in other ppls houses who have what you want. Then i go back to the once dumpy part of the house and now it's totally referbished and beautiful with a huge party going on.

Years ago I used to be into pills but haven't done any in years. I think this dream is telling me that by leaving this all behind me I can get to where I want to be fast....hence the elevator as opposed to stairs. And that it's good medicine for me.

  33. Wow, what a great blog! I was just thinking of my constantly recurring house dreams, googled it, and what amazing experiences I found here. When I was younger (20's-30's) I would dream of awful, evil basements that I was deathly scared of. In my late 30's, I dreamt of houses needing extensive repair with dirt foundations and occasional new-found rooms but unusable and unfixable due to the dirt foundation. Similarly, I would dream of finding or buying a house that initially was very exciting only to find out that it was pretty much rotted out and a "tear-down.". In my 40's I finally started having dreams of houses that were in fairly good shape with extra "wings" that would include a bathroom and a couple of bedrooms and maybe a living room, normally a half-level down from the main house (and slightly ominous.). I was elated to have the extra space but somehow I knew I could never actually use the rooms.

Now in my 50's, I have recurring dreams about all kinds of houses with extra space, normally upstairs, enormous rooms, that are airy and sunny but somehow unusable. I hope one day to have a dream that I will fully utilize the extra space and integrate it into the rest of the house. Overall, I am convinced that the house represents me, at that particular time in my life.

When I was younger and had more emotional problems, I was on a unstable, unhealthy and immature footing or foundation. As I grew older and became more grounded (no pun intended) the house foundations were not the problem but the house was falling apart (my life was stressful, a bit out of control and could turn out to be a "tear-down" at any minute.) Now that I'm nearing 60, I'm a bit more confident and emotionally stable and finding the new rooms are very pleasurable and make me yearn to take advantage of all the bright open extra space. I believe that represents all the things I've wanted to do in my life but may not have the chance due to advancing age and keeping myself stuck in the same job for 15 years that pays the bills but doesn't offer the opportunity to expand my horizons and provide a true sense of accomplishment.

  34. In the dream I am always unfamiliar with the house. It is always a place I have never seen before. There is an eerie feeling but exciting at the same time. There is stone and marble in the house, like something in a castle or mid evil times. There is often a feeling of another time and I'm not suppose to be there. As I find each new room or stair case I feel like I am passing through a secret realm where no one else can follow. It's large and wide spaced and very vivid in color. I love these dreams and I go to sleep every night hoping to have one. lol

  35. I have had these dreams, too, and they always predict a move. I had recurring room dreams two weeks before me and my ex-husband moved without knowing that we would move. I saw my Jungian dream interpretor to help me make sense of the dreams, and she told me that I was going to move, and soon since the dreams were repetitive. I did not believe her. Sure enough, a week after I saw her, I was offered a job promotion in another town, my ex and I put an add in the paper to rent our house out, and within days we got a response and had someone sign a lease agreement to move in a week later. We then found a rental condo in the town were my new job was, and moved a week later! Literally, two weeks from when my dream lady told me that I was to move! About a month before my ex and I seperated, he started complaining about having recurring extra room dreams. A month later, he moved out of the condo, where I stayed, and back into our house.

  36. Wow,people! I had no idea others had these dreams. I've had one every year or two throughout my adult life (I'm nearly 70). Many variations - usually a single room, sometimes a new discovery, but usually a room I recognize and wonder how I could have forgotten it for so long. The room often is full of collections - silk scarves, old toys, antique jewelry, my favorite old sweaters - all of which I instantly recognize, even though in my real life I have never owned or seen any of these things. I usually 'find' the room by opening a door, either interior or exterior, that I realize I haven't opened, or forgot about for a long time. The 'whole new floor' is always discovered above my attic, and as others have mentioned, is accessible with great difficulty, usually a stairway so twisted and narrow as to be suffocatingly claustrophobic, yet I am compelled to keep going, and already concerned that the passageway will be more difficult, or impossible, to descend. The new floor, as are most of the new rooms, are recognizable to me and furnished with things I 'remember'. Both new rooms and the new floors are much more spacious than any rooms or floors in my actual house, and usually have more interesting architectural features. Another variation is of my real-life house - the rooms are laid out slightly differently (and always larger), I find windows, doors, alcoves, even electrical outlets I'd never noticed before. A newer theme (only about 20 years or so!) is finding, again above my attic, an exact replica (but roomier, brighter, airier) of the ground floor of my real house, complete with back door leading to identical backyard, but with different plants (which of course I 'remember' planting years prior). This type of extra floor is always a surprise - I'd no idea it existed. I've never experienced fright, fear, dread in any of these 'discoveries' (except for those darn narrow stairways), they are clean, neat, but sometimes evidence of long-term water leak, or even actual leaking occuring at discovery, i.e., water dripping onto a bed. Two or three times I've dreamt of a small sinkhole opening up in my backyard through which I can glimpse part of an underground room I'd forgotten about. This room is illuminated (?) and again, I see items that are 'mine'. I can never remember how that room was accessed, it's about 20 feet undergroud, no steps going down to it. I've never been able to connect these dreams to any events, emotions, life-situations (as I often can with other types of dreams). Loved reading all the posts here.

  37. All these dreams are very interesting my dream that I had recently was I was in my uncles house but it wasn't how his real house looks like and I walked up into it from a long stair case and it led down to a ballroom where I just left my girlfriend and kissed her goodbye so I was in my uncles house and there was a large glass window and I saw some of my relatives like my uncles wife and some of my cousins but then I got upstairs and was sneaking past them and I was going through alot of rooms and got to the top floor I think the house was four stories and I got to this part and I saw a hole in the wall about 3 by 3 feet I crawled through it and was walking through this space in between walls and when I got out and into another room it was a part I knew was separate from my uncles house and it was a bedroom then I walked through the door and saw stairs leading down and all the floors in this house were covered in carpet I walked down one floor and there was a door smaller and had no handle and I remember thinking someone took the handle so I couldn't get in but I managed to get in regardless and I was in a small cozy room with a leather chair a desk and a bookshelf that I walked to and I knew this was my secret room and I had found it in a previous dream I probably had a year or more ago and found the same room but in a completely different house and I got into the house a different way and the stuff happening around it was different and I feel really comfortable in the room and its what I was looking for and in most of my dreams I'm looking for something I don't know what but maybe this room and whatever meaning it has is what I'm searching for and I have found it before but I think only one other time that I remember.
Any opinions on this or other interpretations are appreciated :)

  38. I often dream of finding a secret room in my childhood home. Usually its in the attic; for whatever reason I am in the known part of the attic and it looks like it normally looks, then I find an extension of it that I didn't know about. In the extension/secret room I usually find toys and games from my childhood that I forgot about or lost. I'm not very good at dream interpreting so I'm not sure what this all means.

  39. So glad that I found this blog and others who have the hidden room dream. I so want to know what this means and it is frustrating. In my dream I am looking for that room that has the secret passageway. I am going from room to room to find it and it is always on the top floor or attic. Sometimes I am by myself in the dream or sometimes I am trying to show others this secret passageway and excited. Anyway, I find it and it takes me all the way down to the basement of the house by using a old wooden ladder that is between the walls of the house. Sometimes I am looking for a room and find it and also find that there are many secret rooms off of that room. It's always a suprise to find them and I too in my dream wonder why they haven't been used because they are really nice rooms. I am excited to find them and can't wait to use the newly found rooms. If anyone has any idea what this all means, I would appreciate your insight.

  41. I've really enjoyed reading all these entries. I also have had these extra room dreams for years. They are some of my favorite dreams. The first one I ever remember was when I was a teenager and I dreamed of finding an attic room with all sorts of fun things, including a closet full of "Gone With The Wind" clothing. My most recent dream was a couple of nights ago when I dreamed my husband and I had moved into a smaller house with ghastly 70s shag carpet. I was trying to figure out how we would make do with the smaller master bedroom when I discovered a huge bonus room behind it. It was also done up in 70s decor, but I was so excited to find it. I said to whoever was with me, "This is just like in my dreams!"

  42. I have had the very same recurring dreams, about finding extra rooms in my house, for many years now. I was thrilled to find this forum, and staggered that so many people have the same dream. The most common version of mine is that I stumble upon a long corridor with about five rooms off it, all on the right hand side. I am always amazed and delighted to find these rooms although they are often muddled and disorganized with damp beds, crumpled duvets and a general air of neglect. Sometimes they are stuffed with old fashioned furniture that I am overwhelmed by because I do not know what to do with it all. However, it feels absolutely wonderful and I wander round in a blissed out state of awe and amazement. On awakening I always feel a huge sense of loss that the dream was not real. I moved house five months ago (not entirely happily) and have since found myself dreaming about asking the new owner if she has found the extra rooms yet! Would really love to know what it all means but have read so many different interpretations of it now that I don't know what to believe.

  43. I am in my mid-50's and have been having house dreams since I was a young girl. Like many others I discover the extra room or suite, usually through a hidden door or staircase. Sometimes it is a basement room, sometimes above the house. I always know they are my rooms and I feel full of awe at the lovely things in them. I am always puzzled that I don't use the things and keep them in these beautiful rooms. I'm always saddened when I wake up and realize it was just a dream. The interpretations indicate the rooms represent different parts of me and reflect the emotions I am dealing (or not) with during my life. I am blown away that these dreams are so common.

  44. I can't believe I found something with recent posts. I always had recurring versions of this dream. I was once at my grandparents house and found a separate room that absolutely made no sense when I woke up. I'll also be visiting my father's family and it's a new house or the same house that just looks different and it will be huge and I'll find weird staircases and doors that lead to weird rooms and I always want to explore them. Lately though, I've been having dreams where I find a secret warehouse of items that can be sold. I literally just had one (that caused me to search for this) where I found a secret for to my fathers house, which led to a floor above a warehouse. It was filled with appliances. I wanted to keep some stuff because I need a few things. I work at a Walmart so I recognized a lot of product (aside from the appliances) and was wondering what it was doing up there. I was with my sisters and we went to grab my father and his family because we wanted to know what the stuff was and wanted to keep some stuff. I've had a very similar dream before also and even one more before that, that one where I found a storage version of my father's old convenient store. I think I remember a monster or something scary being involved with that one.

Furthermore, I've had dreams about working in some warehouse that has weird floors that lead to places.

  45. I've had similar recurring dreams. Had the dream again only last night. It's always the same dream insofar as the extra rooms are a large kitchen and 4 extra bedrooms. The rooms are not in need of repair (and I'm quite excited about the realization of these rooms) but the passage to get to the rooms is bleak, dark and shabby and quite scary. I feel overwhelmed at the thoughts of having to struggle through the passageway to get to these rooms.

  46. I to have had these dreams and they drive me nuts. I have had them for 17 years now. One was a secret addition on to my house thru my closet. One night I actually was in my closet looking for it. At my house now I have had the dream about my naighbors house. With a fancy turn of the century stair case that leads to a new wing. With old fashion furnature. I to get real excited. I had a dream about my work place witch was a old home had a wing no one knew about. My grandparents home had a new upstaires no one had seen . I just had one last night. New house I don't know but in my dream its mine. I want to share my discovery of a new glassed in porch with plenty of storage and a huge livingroom all Victorian style. I live there and didn't know I had it. Then I talk my mom into coming with me to show her those old wood fancy stairs. We go up and I find stairs going to a basement but keep going up to find like 4 bedrooms all decorated old fashion, dusty but beautiful. I love it. Then I wake up.

  47. I also have had this as a recurring dream. I have a house and keep discovering rooms that lead to other hidden rooms. I am happy that I have lots of room for visitors. The house and the rooms have crooked floors, low ceilings, and old (but cosy) bedspreads, curtains, decorations. Because of the low ceilings, small rooms, and the fact that they all lead to other small rooms, make me feel claustrophobic and overwhelmed (at the thought of cleaning them all and finding my way around them, and also at the thought of having so many visitors or permanent guests. Perhaps this is about my being overwhelmed by family and friends who need me. I can house them, but I'll be doing a lot of suffoccating work while they are staying with me.

  48. I have had these same types of dreams.Sometimes the dream is the same house from a previous dream with hidden rooms that only I find or know about. I seem to feel satisfied that I am the only one that knows of the room and keep it to myself. Like some of the others have shared, the rooms that I find are usually old ,dusty and in a run down state. I have thought that maybe I feel tired and overwhelmed and need to steal away some secret time to myself to feel that satisfaction I feel when I find the hidden rooms. As I too have always taken care of others but not made time for myself. Hmmm??!!

  52. Last night I had a dream, in which my mother, my elder brother and I were sitting by a living room table in a house, which clearly belonged to me and my family was only visiting me. (Btw, in my waking life my mother's been deceased for almost 14 years.) Then I suddenly pointed at the corner of the living room and declared: "Wow, I've been blind! I've never noticed that narrow corridor (curved; weirdly shaped) and that door in the end!" As I said this, this new door had somehow opened, so now it was very obvious that there was an extra room in the house. My brother stayed at the table (he was playing with a couple of tablets and an iphone), but I and my mother got up and walked in to that new room. The room was tiny with two narrow beds. The bedspreads were "grandma style". Walls were painted marine blue (too dark if you ask me). Leaning against one of the beds was a painting of tulips, which seemed very amateurish (I'm a painter, but I haven't painted in years). I said to my mother that I could use this room as a spare bedroom for two guests or throw out at least one of the beds and turn it into a study. Then my mother noticed yet another door in the corner of this new room and it led to a tiny bathroom. It looked like it had been recently renovated, but was covered with dust. My mother flushed the toilet and it worked fine. We came back into the living room and I said to my brother: "Hey, you could have a new room with a private bathroom, if you clean it first". - All in all I was quite pleased with this new discovery. (This was written by a Finnish woman in her 50s.)

  53. I've had many of these dreams lately. They are never the same rooms. Sometimes it's only one room - but I've had entire wings appear in houses. I'm always really surprised to find these rooms. They are always a bit neglected from no one using them. I'm always so excited by the potential of the rooms. I explore around the rooms and imagine how good they will look when I fix them up. They all just need a little elbow grease and TLC. Sometimes I find interesting items left behind from the last people that used the room. I don't get the feeling that these were ever my items/belongings. Last night - I was like... wow! Can you believe these people left this stuff here! It wasn't really exciting stuff - but I was happy to find it for some reason. I never feel scared in the rooms. I'm usually excited and can't wait until I can share these rooms with other people who also don't know about them.

  54. I have these dreams every now and then. I usually discover a huge space which doubles the size of the house- I usually have to access it through a loft hatch. I am always pleased to have the new space but at the same time very annoyed at myself for never noticing it. Sometimes I have to crawl through a tunnel in the roof to access the space but its never scary. I have always liked the idea of using a secret tunnel in a house. My interpretation is that maybe I feel that I have some unlocked potential that I'm waiting to explore. Or possibly that I don't let people see who I really am?! I'm glad there are other people having these dreams anyway.. Tom (30)

  56. I have the same dream..a hidden room leading to the attic. The attic is filled with ornaments, costumes, furnature, scrap books from a different time. In the attic was a woman, a ghost. At first I was afraid of her but over time, the fear disappeared and I learned her name was Elizabeth. Each time I had the dream, I made sure to call out her name before I entered. I knew the items in the rooms didn't belong to me and I could never remove them or benefit from selling them. In title, as this was my house, I suppose they were mine but the feeling was to remove them would anger her. I had variations of this dream for years - maybe 10. But lately, it doesn't come. In a very strange way, I miss it..it seemed to very much part of me..

  57. Ive dreamed this dream twice in the past two days but know ive dreamt it in the past. Its not new floors or staircases, and not always the same house, but im wondering this house and I always manage to be in a room.
But then theres a door and through it a box like storage space, but always, always, theres a small door at the top, big enough for a human to crawl through.
I use something to climb up, go through it to a dusty and dark cramped space.
And always find a hollow wall, cobwebbed and cramped, ill knock it out of place to a bigger-ish box like room. Sometimes itll have a view from an open window, sometimes its pitch black.
The past two days ive dreamt the space is pitch black, I wish I knew more to my dreams,.

  58. I always had these dreams about walking to the end of my street.

(At the end of my street we have a small path covered in leaves and surrounded by trees that leads to another street, and next to that path is a downwards hill that has a big house at the bottom, and there is stairs leading down to it.)

And as I walked down this street, the path was now a bridge and below it was an endless pit, and where the downwards hill and house would usually be, was a wide red bridge, and as I walked across it, there was a small opening in a gathering of trees, and I walked through it and found a huge pond, with stepping rocks in it, making a path, and the path led to a waterfall, and this hidden area felt like home, and I never wanted to leave it, and as I walked around, I felt an odd presence of a women, and then I woke up.

I've had that dream first when I was about 7, then 10 and now, 13.
Each time I had this dream it had small changes, like the opening in the trees turned into a door, and the bridge turned into a walkway.

I wish I knew more to my dreams, this one has occurred many more then three times, and I now want to know why this is happening.

  59. Woww!! I too have these dreams. One dream i had i wasnt in my own home but in my dream it was and i find an extra thin steep stair case. Which takes me to many rooms. One room was a childs bedroom which was neat but had a very spooky feel too it. The room next to that had a very dark presence in it. And when i walked up the corridor a man in a hat walked past me like i wasnt there. Last night i dreamt i was in another big house but i only lived down stairs and i told 2 people i dont reconise to come an "see this" i lead them to thes spare rooms upstairs that are scruffy but scary although i feel exstatic i have these spare rooms even though i wouldnt even think of occupying them. I wake up feeling very freaked out by these dreams as they are always scary.

  60. Same as all above same dream with one minor difference.

I just don't find a different room or a few rooms, but there is another entire house I find. This has been reoccurring since I was a child.

And its not just the new house I find that is in total disrepair, but the other half as well with one needing a lot of work, and the other one needing really a lot of work.

Probably on average have a variation of this dream twice a month or so.

Dreamed this last night. This time I was with a group of people (don't know who) and was viewing the house from the outside (not my real house) and was sort of excited to finally see it for the first time. Remembering in my dream all the other times I've dreamed of the secret house. Went inside one of the halves of the home with someone from the dream and instantly felt extremely uneasy. Exited the house. Can't recall if the inside was a disaster or not. But I don't think it was. That's all I remember.

  61. I dream almost every night that my house has secret rooms behind and underneath the walls in my closet. They often have tunnels leading to other places in the city

  63. After my dream last night, I googled "hidden room dreams" and found this blog.

Had an outrageously vivid dream last night. I was back in the little house I grew up in. Parents dead; my siblings and I were preparing it for sale (this part actually happened twenty years ago). But here’s the weird part:

I started exploring, and found old rooms I’d either never seen before, or somehow half-remembered. They were dusty and old, accessible by winding staircases. Filled with antiques that I examined with amazement. Old books, tools, electronics… looked like from the 1920s. I found an old attic, and peered out the window. Followed a maze to a basement that looked like it could have been a nightclub at one time; a small stage with a separate stone staircase that led to it; another small hallway that led to the audience section. More antiques; some musical instruments and novelties.

Explored some more, and found a small bistro! People were having lunch, a lady asked me if I wanted a seat. I told her this was my house, and I needed directions back to the “normal” part of the house.

My overall feeling was one of awe and joy, like finding hidden treasure.

  64. I keep having this same dream about the house I currently live in. Every time it's the same I peel back the paint from behind the fridge and bam a little wooden door appears. Which leads to a much bigger room leading to a hallway. Theirs at least three rooms here but I've never gone in them. The room that has my attention is the bathroom. Oh it's so beautiful. The first time it was scary and I didn't want to go in but now it's simply to die for! Beautiful Victorian tubs and two of them! His and her sinks, and to top it off the cabinets are filled with all types of toiletries my heart so desires. I've tried time and time again to inspect this room but I'm always disrupted or I wake up. Any one care to help me figure this out. So far I've been having this same dream for about 2 years and each time it's just a little different.

  65. I'm amazed at the similarities that we all share. I have this recurring dream that I own this three- floor property. The basement is scary and decrepit but is spacious and has huge potential. I wonder if medication has an influence. I take welbutrin and lexapro.

  66. Reoccurring dream of a strange house that is familiar to me in my dream. The house is about the same size of my current home but then I get the urge to revisit extra rooms that are within my childrens bedrooms. I go in and look around feeling very lucky to have all of the extra space but then before i make it all the way in i am struck with a sense of fear and i turn around and run out shutting and locking the door behind me. This last dream actually contained a creepy monster looking figure laying on a bed. I've dreamed of children locked away in there before too. I watch a lot of crazy psycho scary movies so I cant help but wonder if I incorporate alot of the craziness into my dreams.

  67. My dream is very peculiar it short and has little detail but I find myself having the same dream over and over. I find myself running from someone or something, I often run past the shower but sometimes there is no shower at all. After the shower I run towards the master bedroom closet and close the door behind me and turn on my flashlight. I sit vary still and notice a slight breeze and move towards the back of the closet and feel the wall, as I search I find a small indent in the wallpaper and tear it to find a rope handle, which I pull and open a little door about 1 foot tall. I crawl through the opening and find myself in a room with old but fancy things sitting on dusty tables or pedestals. This room fills me with comfort and excitement but at the same time fear. I'm the kinda guy that likes to read fantasy and action books and sometimes a good mystery novel, I have a very creative imagination. I believe that it is a possibility that my love for things I read in my books makes them appear in this room because every time I have his dream The old items are gone and replaced by ones in books that I've read recently. I read a lot so usually The room is pretty big but every once and a while It's small and barren, "This is very rare though."

  68. I have a crazy story and interpretation of this extra room phenomena. My ex husband and I had our house on the market for over two years and thought we would never sell it back in 2008, during the housing crisis. I kept having recurring dreams that the house we lived in and were trying to sell had extra rooms and a whole other floor I was unaware of. One of my friends at the time was into Jungian dream interpretation, and recommended I see a woman by the name of Sue Marhens who ran a Jungian center. I went to see her and told her of my dreams, and she said that extra rooms in the house you live in mean that you will me moving very, very soon. I did not really believe this, as our house was sitting on the market for two years, untouched. I asked her how soon I would be moving, and she said by the end of the month, which at the time was two weeks away. Literally, the next day my ex husband said he ran into one of my son's classmate's fathers at school. the father told him that him and his wife were going through a divorce and he needed to find a place to live ASAP. My ex husband told him of our house being on the market, and that if he wanted, we could rent it to him for the time being, as we were looking to re-locate to another area over an hour away. The man said he would be willing to move in at the end of the month or beginning of the following month. Once I heard of this, I looked for rental properties in the area we were planning on moving to, and found a beautiful condo and the owner immediately wanted to rent it to us. Needless to say, we did move in a very short time, less than two weeks, as was predicted by the Jungian dream work adviser, Sue!

  69. While it's weird to read about so many people with dreams similar to mine, it's also kind of reassuring. Mine have been coming 1-2 times a week in the past couple months. They're never exactly the same but there are always some similarities. In my dreams, I'm always showing people (I don't know who they are or why they're there) around my house. It's not like any real house I've known, but in the dreams I know it's mine and that I've recently bought it. The houses generally aren't much to look at from the outside, but the insides are really cool. As we wander around, sometimes I'm discovering new rooms and entire sections of the house, and occasionally I'm looking for one certain space that I have trouble finding, but eventually do find. That hard to find space is a VERY grand foyer that you would be in if you entered through the front door (which is not used, in the dream). New spaces that I find are often a second kitchen, usually kind of old fashioned and a bit dusty, or a whole giant space that is like a large restaurant/bar with many tables and a stage - it's always dimly lit and looks like it hasn't been used for a long time, several small but inviting decks and porches overlooking the side yard and backyard, MANY bathrooms, though not traditional ones. All sorts of bathrooms, most meant for multiple users, some with several variations of tubs and showers, some with many sinks, and some with many toilets just lined up in rows (no stalls). The bathrooms are all dark and appear unused. Sometimes there is also a very large basement with concrete walls and floors and a very long and wide hallway from the big open area that leads to the door of an attached company's warehouse. I'm always amazed at the storage space I didn't know we had, but worried that the connection from my house to the company's warehouse isn't secure. Occasionally my husband and I have racks and racks of clothing that we're storing in attic space or in that large basement, too. And one room is always there - it's a formal living room that appears to be from maybe the 1930's-1940's, with lots of old-fashioned furniture and decor. It's kind of dusty and clearly unused and is always accessed by going up one floor. In the dreams, this room isn't really a surprise - I always know it's there, and I don't particularly want to go to it/show it because it's creepy, even though it has windows that let the daylight in. I sense some spirits in that room and don't feel they're harmful, I just don't like them. Last but not least, sometimes I also discover extra yard space and always try to figure out how we can fit a pool in. Aside from the one creepy room and a few security concerns, in the dreams I'm always quite excited, intrigued and amazed by what I'm finding. Any insights are welcome!

    1. In a journey of self discovery, many aspects will be interesting, fascinating, or "really cool." However, we may sense emerging aspects of ourselves that we aren't ready to look at yet.

  70. In my recurring dreams, I am in our house that we built 20 years ago. I realize there are extra rooms in the basement but know they are in disrepair and never go there. My husband discourages me from going there but I do anyway. I am amazed at the beauty of these rooms, a family room, dining room, fireplace, bedrooms with stunning bathrooms. A beautiful south walk out entry with huge windows and a beautiful deck. All in terrible disrepair. The steps are so shakey. I am excited to find these rooms and wonder why we can't just repair it and use it!

  71. I have recurring dreams about hidden ballrooms. Often it's in the same big house I briefly lived in long ago (which in reality had one small secret room). When the dream takes place in this house, I'm generally sneaking back in to show someone else this incredible other secret room, which takes the form of various majestic ballrooms or stage theatres, often covered in cobwebs. It's an amazing experience in the dream, though there is usually some amount of stress because it's very tricky to locate, and a lot of times I'm not really supposed to be there. Often I'll have to find a hatch, then there is either a downward slope, and up again, or it's in a very high place, or in the very basement. It's always quite complicated to get to it. Occasionally (especially when I first started having these) I would unknowingly stumble upon them, but more often now I know it's there and I'm trying to get back to it, especially to show someone, but the location never makes sense in a spacial manner but I eventually remember "the trick" to locating it. I have them so often I googled "hidden ballroom dreams" and found this page. I perform standup comedy and love those types of venues, which is why I assume my secret room takes that form, though I'm not sure about the underlying reason for people having secret room dreams, and almost all of them involving dust/dis-use/cobwebs/etc.

  72. It's amazing that we've all had these dreams! I can recall 2, the first was probably a year ago, the second was the other night. The 1st was very vivid and frightening:

I was in my previous home looking for something in my parent's walk-in closet, and came upon a secret passageway on the back wall. Our family dog (who died several years before this dream) was with me, but for whatever reason I told her to wait outside as I entered the passage. Inside, it just seemed like a never ending hallway with windows to the left and sometimes on both sides. It was glowing from the sunset, which made the hallway warm and inviting. However, as time went on and the hallway didn't seem to end, fear began to kick in. Still, I trekked on, sometimes making turns into a new hallway, but mostly just going straight ahead into more hallways. The "sunset" was gone now and the journey was feeling more scary. Eventually, I found a room which appeared to be my sister's room from our teenage years. This room also had a walk-in closet, and (unsurprisingly) that lead to another secret passage. Seeing how the room felt dead, and realizing I was too far from "home" now, I became overwhelmed with fear. I felt paranoid, like something menacing was going to happen. I also remembered that my old dog was still waiting for me, so I started to run back. Unfortunately, I can't remember if I made it out or how the dream ended, but I woke up terrified and sweaty.

Now, in the 2nd dream, it appeared that my family and I were just moving into this house (but the house looked very identical to the one in the first dream). There was a similar entrance to a "new" hidden room, but in the back of an average sliding door closet. Thankfully, I did not go in! Lol. My dog was also with me again, but this time she was laying down either asleep or dying. My mom passed by carrying a box, she said something to our dog which got her to wag her tail, so I felt relieved. When my mom passed by, I remember making sure to hide the secret entrance. That was about it for this dream.,

It's so strange that I had nearly the same dream after a long time. I don't remember this happening since I had a recurring nightmare as a kid. That didn't involve secret rooms though. What could all of this mean? It seems a good portion of us have fear in these dreams, especially towards the end. Is it just our brain trying to scare us so we wake up? Kind of like that "falling" off the bed jolt? I'd love if somebody could respond, I'd appreciate any explanation about these intriguing dreams!

  74. I dream of my home with a second front door on the front porch only I can see. I enter it and find it lived in, clean, occupied, but clearly by old people with older tastes and decorations. I always leave the room, quarters, whatever, and keep it secret, nobody knows about the door anyway, but I don't disturb the place. Just comforted that the room is there.

  75. I used to have dreams about comfortable homes, but inside there were always secret rooms that were terrifying even before opening the door to them. Couple times I opened the door, but shut it immediately. In one dream I put on my big girl panties and walked through some of the rooms, I had to force myself because there was nothing in them but a intense feeling of fear, that I've never even felt in real life, and dread. Once, I walked up to a door and said "nope, not even going there", and walked away. My interpretation of the dream didn't dawn on me until after my issue was resolved. My ex was hiding some incredibly disturbing secrets, like so bad that I never knew people did things like that. He had a hidden life and the abject things he did throughout the years grew, I'm assuming that's why the number of hidden rooms increased throughout the years. I think I had an inkling that something was going on, in my waking life, but didn't want to face it. No more ex, no more nightmares. I don't think my post will help anyone interpret their haunted room dreams, I really think dreams have individual meanings for each person. All the dream interpretation info on the internet was off base and didn't help me figure anything out.

  76. I have a similar recurring dream except the hidden room is in the ceiling. You get in by moving a hidden panel and I'm barely able to squeeze in with how small the opening is. The room is very small as well and there is boxes and tubs lined against the wall, some filled with clothes but im never able to get into the others. But Im always happen when I 'rediscover' the room

  77. I have a reoccurring dream in an old family home. Although it has changed slightly. In it is a secret chamber that leads to evil, even sometimes the devil himself, lately my father has been in the room. Although I feel fear , I am also overcome with a need to confront the devil, I want to fight him or at least show him I am unafraid. In doing so that room which is still acceptable no longer scares me. I know find myself levitating towards other home, amd family members. At which point the dream becomes extremely difficult. I am caught between to worlds, my power is great but my inability to stay in this world because frightening, sometimes I scream for someone to wake me although I am alone. When danger is near I can levitate even my loved ones to safety yet I am paralyzed as I cannot let go of that other world…. Weird right ??

  78. I have now had the same dream I believe for the 4th time. In the dream I'm in a home I do not currently own and I am not familiar with. In the basement there is a hallway with 2 doors. The 1st door is a really neat "secret room" with a bunch of stuff from the 60's and 70's. Chairs, furniture, fridge, telephone, etc. Just really neat stuff in super nice condition. Very well placed as if it were lived in. The 2nd door is full of things that I collect. Gas & oil memorabilia, Coca Cola and other soft drink collectibles. Both rooms have me in complete awe. It's almost as if I'm in heaven because it's such a neat place. I have tried explaining it to my wife but my words just can't do the dream justice. I wish I could draw a picture as good as I can see it in my dreams. It is absolutely unreal. I would give anything to make sense of this.

  79. Wow, it's fascinating how many of us have similar dreams about hidden rooms. I've had those too! In my dream, I often stumble upon these secret spaces in my house. It's like a mixture of excitement and surprise, just like you described. It's like finding a hidden treasure or a part of myself I didn't know existed.

I love the interpretations you shared from those websites. I think dreams are deeply personal, and while those interpretations might offer some insights, it's ultimately up to you to decipher what they mean for you personally.

For me, I've always felt that when I find a hidden room in my dream, it symbolizes discovering new aspects of myself or my life that I may not have been fully aware of. It's like my subconscious telling me that there's so much more to explore within me.

And, like you, I often feel a sense of relief and excitement when I find these rooms. It's like a reminder that life is full of surprises and unexplored possibilities. So, whether it's about self-discovery or just wanting a little more space, I think your dream is a beautiful reflection of your inner world. 🌟😊

  80. I have three different versions of these dreams, all recurring but not very often, sometimes years apart. The first one I dreamed mostly in childhood, and it was about my brother and I finding new rooms/spaces in the house, or similar house, that my family moved into when I was 6. Sometimes we crawled through large vents to get to the rooms. That one makes sense, because the actual house is bigger on the inside than it appears and rooms have been rearranged/repurposed/added onto over the 100+ years the house has existed. In the second version, which started in young adulthood, I'm in a house that is mine in the dream, but not the house I actually live in, and I discover an extra section of the house that I had known was there but forgotten. It has a couple of large open space rooms with very nice furnishings, like a parlor and old-fashioned posh living area, with a grand piano and nice chairs and couches and end tables, high end furniture and it's a little nicer than the rest of the house, and I'm always thinking, oh yeah, I have this lovely space, I'd forgotten about this. In the third there's extra room on the other side of a closet in what is my youngest son's room in the dream, a space that was just not finished out of architectural/budget convenience of whoever had last renovated the house, and I'm trying to figure out how to open it all up and how to use/build the space because we need the room and I dont want to waste the space.
